Parents and caregivers are being urged to check their homes for two popular craft products after a precautionary recall was announced due to potential asbestos contamination.

The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) has confirmed that EC Rainbow Sand (1.3kg) and Creatistics Coloured Sand (1kg), available in various colours and commonly used for children’s arts and crafts and sensory play, may pose a health risk. Testing in Australia detected asbestos in similar products, and while New Zealand testing is ongoing, the supplier has issued a voluntary recall.

Why this matters for your family:

Asbestos is a dangerous substance. Even tiny amounts can cause serious long-term health problems, including lung disease and cancer. Children are especially vulnerable because they may inhale dust while playing.

What should you do right now:

  • Stop using these products immediately.
  • Do not let children touch or play with the sand.
  • Seal the sand in a sturdy container and keep it out of reach.
  • Do not throw it in household rubbish or vacuum it up.
  • Contact a Class A licensed asbestos removalist for safe disposal (Asbestos removal licence holders(external link) — WorkSafe).
  • Once secured, contact the retailer for a refund under the Consumer Guarantees Act.

Where these products were sold:

They were available at stores like Paper Plus, Hobby Land, NZ School Shop, Office Products Depot, Discount Office, Acquire, and Qizzle and possibly other retailers as well as online.
