New Zealand’s first Toy Safety Week is here to help make playtime safer.

20 to 26 October 2025 is Toy Safety Week, New Zealand’s first national campaign focused on making playtime safer for tamariki. Led by Safekids Aotearoa, Consumer Protection, Whānau Āwhina Plunket, Health New Zealand, and the Commerce Commission, this week is all about helping whānau and professionals who work with children, to make safer choices when buying, storing, and supervising toys.

Every year, more than 1,250 toy-related injuries are reported among children aged between 0 and 3 years. Many of these can be prevented with simple safety checks and informed decisions.

Six quick toy safety tips

Whether you're a parent, caregiver, toy librarian, or Early Childhood Education teacher, these steps can help reduce risks:

  • Size matters – Avoid toys small enough to fit in mouths, ears, or noses.
  • Surface check – Look for smooth finishes and avoid sharp edges.
  • String safety – Steer clear of toys with long cords or strings.
  • Supervision – Know which toys require adult supervision.
  • Sounds – Make sure toys aren’t too loud for little ears.
  • Swallow risk – Watch for small parts and that button batteries are well secured.

Regularly checking your toy box and removing broken or unsafe toys can make a big difference.

Working together for safer play

Toy Safety Week is a reminder that everyone has a role in keeping tamariki safe. Parents and caregivers are encouraged to check for recalls, report unsafe products, and use their rights under the Consumer Guarantees Act.
