Before you hire a registered tradesperson such as a plumber, electrical worker or builder, ask to see their authorisation card. Check their card’s expiry date to see if it is current and check what work they are authorised to do. Check their work history and ask for references from previous clients.

If a tradesperson or utility provider fails to meet certain consumer guarantees or promises for work or materials, you may be able to seek a remedy under the Consumer Guarantees Act and other consumer laws. Examples of utility providers are electricity retailers, and phone and internet companies.
